Neem Karoli Baba (Hindi: नीम करौली बाबा, romanized: nīm karaulī bābā) or Neeb Karori Baba (Hindi: नीब करौरी बाबा, romanized: nīb karaurī bābā) (c. 1900 – 11 September 1973), also known to his followers as ‘Maharaj-ji’, was a Hindu guru and a devotee of the Hindu deity Hanuman. He is known outside India for being the spiritual master of a number of Americans who travelled to India in the 1960s and 1970s.

Biography
Lakshman Narayan Sharma was born circa 1900 in the Akbarpur village of Firozabad district, Uttar Pradesh, India. He belonged to a wealthy Brahmin family. Lakshman’s parents had married him off to a girl at the age of 11 and he had to leave home and roam as a wandering sadhu. He later went back to live a settled life with his wife according to his father’s wish, and they were blessed with two sons and a daughter.
As Maharaj-ji
Neem Karoli Baba, then known as Baba Lakshman Das, spelled ‘Laxman Das’, left his home in 1958. Ram Dass recounts a story of how Baba Lakshman Das boarded a train without a ticket, and the conductor decided to halt the train and force him off in Neem Karoli village of Farrukhabad district (U.P). The conductor, after making Baba get off the train, found that it would not start again. It took several tries to start the train before someone suggested that the conductor should let the sadhu back onto the train.
The train officials agreed that Neem Karoli would board the train under two conditions: 1) the railway company would agree to build a station in the village of Neem Karoli (at that time, the villagers had to walk miles to the nearest station), and 2) the railway company agrees to treat ascetics better henceforth.
The officials agreed, and Neem Karoli Baba boarded the train joking, ‘What, is it up to me to start trains? Soon after he boarded the train, the train started moving but the train drivers would not budge ahead without the sadhu’s permission to move further. Baba blessed them and the train moved forward. Later on, a train station was constructed in the village. There is no fact behind this story to be true. Baba stayed in the village for sometime and was given a name by the villagers.
He roamed extensively all over Northern India afterwards. He was known by many names during this period, such as: Lakshman Das, Handi Wallah Baba, and Tikonia Walla Baba. Tallaiya Baba was the name he was known by when he did tapasya and sadhana at Vavania village of Morbi in Gujarat. In Vrindavan, local inhabitants called him by the name of Chamatkari Baba (‘miracle baba’). During his life, two principal ashrams were built, one at Kainchi and one at Vrindavan. In time over 100 temples were constructed in his name.
The Kainchi Dham ashram, where he spent the last ten years of his life, was constructed in 1964 with a Hanuman temple. It began two years earlier as a simple platform constructed for two local sadhus, Premi Baba and Sombari Maharaj, to perform yagnas. Over the years, the temple, situated 17 km from Nainital on the Nainital-Almora road, has become an important pilgrimage site for locals, as well as spiritual seekers and devotees worldwide. Each year on June 15, the Kainchi Dham Bhandara takes place to commemorate the inauguration of the temple, a celebration that typically receives over 100,000 devotees.
Death
Neem Karoli Baba died around 1:15 a.m. on 11 September 1973 in a hospital at Vrindavan, India, after slipping into a diabetic coma. He had been returning by night train to Kainchi near Nainital, from Agra where he had visited a heart specialist due to experiencing pains in his chest. He and his traveling companions had disembarked at Mathura railway station where he began convulsing and requested being taken to Shri Dham Vrindavan.
They took him to the hospital’s emergency room. In the hospital, the doctor injected his body, putting over his face an oxygen mask. The staff in the hospital told us that he is in diabetic coma but his pulse is fine. Maharajji came out of the drug-induced coma. He pulled the oxygen mask off his face and the blood pressure measuring band off his arm and murmured, ‘Bekar (useless).’ Maharajji wanted some Ganga water. They hadn’t prepared it, so brought him regular water. He went on repeating over and over, ‘Jaya Jagadish Hare’ (‘Hail to the Lord of the Universe’), every time in a softer tone. The face was calm, and every trace of suffering had disappeared. He was dead.
His samadhi was built within the complex of the Vrindavan ashram, which also has some of his personal belongings.
Philosophy
Neem Karoli Baba was a lifelong adept of bhakti yoga and encouraged service to others (seva) as the highest form of unconditional devotion to God. As the devotee Anjani in Miracle of Love, compiled by Ram Dass, wrote:
There can be no biography of him. Facts are few, stories many. He seems to have been known by different names in many parts of India, appearing and disappearing through the years. His non-Indian devotees of recent years knew him as Neem Karoli Baba, but mostly as ‘Maharajji.’ Just as he said, he was ‘nobody.’ He gave no discourses; the briefest, simplest stories were his teachings.
Usually, he would sit or lie on a wooden bench wrapped in a plaid blanket while a few devotees would sit around him. Visitors came and went; they were given food, a few words, a nod, a pat on the head or back, and they were sent away. There was gossip and laughter because he loved to joke.
Orders for running the ashram were given, usually in a piercing yell across the compound. Sometimes he sat in silence, absorbed in another world to which we could not follow, but bliss and peace poured down on us. Who he was was no more than the experience of him, the nectar of his presence, the totality of his absence, enveloping us now like his plaid blanket.
He said that attachment and ego are the greatest obstacles before the realization of God and, ‘a learned man and a fool are alike as long as there is attachment and ego in the physical body’. He would remind people to leave everything to god’s will and surrender to god so that, they may create love and trust in him; thus, having no unnecessary disturbances in life.

Sri Siddhi Ma
Siddhi Ma is a great figure in the spiritual lineage of Baba Neem Karoli Maharaj, known for her absolute devotion and great service to the community. Born in Almora, she had eight sisters in her family. Siddhi Ma married Tularam Sah, who was a great devotee of Baba Neem Karoli. After her husband’s death, she made a deep commitment to serve Baba, ultimately sacrificing her family life to devote herself fully to spiritual pursuits.

When Baba Neem Karoli Maharaj became a Brahmaline in 1973, Siddhi Ma was appointed as his successor and was entrusted with the management of the Kainchi Dham temple complex. She was now an important figure in the spiritual community. The devotees held her in great reverence, even comparing her spiritual status to that of Baba. It is said that before becoming Brahmaline, Baba wrote a line for her, affirming her significance: “Mother, wherever you live, there will be Mangal.”
She used to hold darshan sessions for the devotees regularly at Kainchi Dham on Saturday and Tuesday. Her presence was believed to be a boon, and most of the devotees felt that she had also taken some of the supernatural powers of Baba with her. She is compassionate in nature, and it is an undisputed fact that whatever people came to see her for to alleviate the suffering was immediately removed. She used to take many pilgrimages, which established unity and fraternity among the devotees.
In 1980, Siddhi Ma established an ashram in Rishikesh, further expanding the spiritual outreach of Baba Neem Karoli Maharaj, who is associated with 108 ashrams globally. The Kainchi Dham and Taos Ashram in New Mexico, USA, are among the most significant.
Following her death on 28 December 2017 at the age of 92, a grand statue of Siddhi Ma was erected at Kainchi Dham along with a dedicated pooja room. It is a symbol that attracts the devotees to pay their respect and remember her. The death anniversary every year is observed as an annual bhandara where thousands of devotees flock in to pay homage to her memory.
Siddhi Ma’s influence transcends her lifetime because stories of her grace and spiritual power continue to inspire new generations. Her life remains a testament to devotion, compassion, and spiritual fulfillment that solidifies her place in the annals of spiritual history.

Miracles of Neem Karoli Baba
The spiritual origins of Apple: Steve Jobs’ association with Neem Baba Karoli
Apple is now completely present in India. Today, the business established its first retail location at the Jio World Drive mall in BKC, Mumbai, after the start of iPhone manufacture in the nation. On April 20, a second one will open in Delhi’s Select Citywalk mall in Saket.

In a way, most people who are familiar with the life story of Apple founder Steve Jobs would concur that the company started in India. Jobs’ intuitive life began with a shock when he traveled to India in 1974. This intuition led him to develop some of the most inventive technological goods.
Jobs was raised on the West Coast of America in the 1960s, a time when the counterculture—a potent concoction of Eastern mysticism, drugs, music, and idealism—was in vogue. The Summer of Love, a mass gathering of thousands that popularized the hippie lifestyle, took place in San Francisco a few years before to Jobs’ trip to India. Buddhist and Hindu gurus were friends with rock stars. ISKCON’s Srila Prabhupada was spotted singing alongside Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead. The hippies believed that a new Age of Aquarius had arrived, one that was marked by peace and love.
Jobs, a college dropout who ate free meals at the Hare Krishna temple in Portland, was accumulating money for his journey to India at the time, when he was in a psychedelic cloud of LSD and spirituality. His inspiration came from the classic book “Be Here Now” by Richard Alpert, who became well-known in America as Ram Dass, a follower of Neem Karoli Baba, a mystic saint who his followers believed to be an incarnation of Hanuman ji.
Jobs traveled to India in 1974 as an 18-year-old traveler seeking enlightenment. He was accompanied by fellow dropout and buddy Dan Kottke, who would go on to become the first employee of Apple to work there. Baba had already died a year prior when Jobs arrived to Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram in Kainchi, close to Nainital. Additionally, Jobs’ LSD images of India were not accurate.
“Many of Jobs’s long-held misconceptions about India were called into question by the sweltering, miserable summer. According to Michael Moritz, Jobs’ biographer and a partner at Sequoia Capital, “He was shocked to discover that India was much poorer than he had anticipated and that there was a contradiction between the country’s sanctity and its state.” “It was the first time I realized that maybe Thomas Edison had done more to improve the world than Karl Marx and the ‘Nib-crore baba’ put together,” Jobs was quoted as saying by Moritz.
However, Jobs experienced more than just disenchantment while in India. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have advised Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook to go to Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram in India over thirty years later if he needed to regain his mojo.
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Facebook’s US headquarters in 2015, Zuckerberg informed him that Jobs had advised him to go to the ashram in order to rediscover himself: “He (Jobs) advised me to go to this temple in India that he had visited early in his development of thinking about what he wanted Apple and his vision of the future to be in order to re-establish a connection with what I felt was the company’s mission.”
In 2008, Zuckerberg made a trip to the Kainchi Ashram. “This is something I’ve always remembered over the last ten years as we’ve built Facebook,” he told Modi. “I went and I traveled for almost a month, and seeing people, seeing how people connected, and having the opportunity to feel how much better the world could be if everyone has a strong ability to connect reinforced for me the importance of what we were doing.”
Neem Karoli Baba was a mystic with no ideology who drew a lot of Western celebrities, such as Julia Roberts, Larry Page of Google, and Jeff Skoll of eBay. He just had one message: help others. One of his most well-known followers, Richard Alpert, also known as Ram Dass, popularized him in the West. He formerly studied the therapeutic benefits of psychedelic substances at Harvard University alongside Timothy Leary.
Jobs realized that his journey to India had a significant impact on his life, despite his initial disappointment.
Walter Isaacson writes in his biography of Jobs: “Years later, sitting in his Palo Alto garden, he reflected on the lasting influence of his trip to India: “Coming back to America was, for me, much more of a cultural shock than going to India.”. The people here in the Indian countryside do not work with their intellect like us, they use their intuition, and here their intuition is so much more developed than everywhere else in the world.
And actually, I think, in my opinion, it’s much stronger than intellect. That has greatly affected my work. Western rational thought is not one of our indigenous human qualities-it is learned-and it is a great achievement of Western civilization. In the villages of India, they never learned it. They learned something else, which is in some ways as valuable but in other ways isn’t. That’s the power of intuition and experiential wisdom”.
Mark Zuckerberg: A Haven of Confidence and Clarity

Steve Jobs’ suggestion prompted Mark Zuckerberg to visit Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram in 2015. Zuckerberg was then battling the mounting demands of Facebook’s explosive growth. He followed Jobs’ suggestion and went to the ashram to get perspective and serenity in order to find a sense of direction.
While he was there, Zuckerberg thought back on his time at Facebook and the difficulties he encountered as the business grew. The encounter “reinforced his belief in Facebook’s mission to connect the world,” he later said. “The ashram gave me the courage and resolve to keep going during a crucial stage in Facebook’s development,” he stated in 2015.
Mysteries
1. How did Neem Karoli Baba attain his spiritual power?
Neem Karoli Baba’s spiritual power has long been the subject of intrigue and awe. His ability to heal the sick, foresee events, and offer profound spiritual guidance was seen by many as divine. However, the source of his power remains a mystery, even among his closest devotees. Unlike many spiritual figures who claim to have undergone rigorous practices to attain their powers, Neem Karoli Baba’s life seemed to follow an unorthodox path. He often downplayed any notions of personal accomplishment, attributing his powers solely to the divine.
One theory is that Baba’s extraordinary abilities were a result of his deep surrender to God. His life was marked by an absolute devotion to God, often described as “complete self-surrender.” This state of surrender allowed him to transcend worldly attachments and connect with a higher spiritual consciousness. His power, therefore, might not have been something he cultivated intentionally, but rather something that manifested as a result of his pure devotion. Neem Karoli Baba’s powers were not about performing miracles for show, but rather were expressions of divine love and grace, helping people heal spiritually and physically.
Many stories of his miraculous powers involve his ability to instantly understand a person’s unspoken needs, answer prayers before they were uttered, and heal people through a mere glance or touch. This led many to believe that his connection to the divine allowed him to act as a channel for miraculous occurrences. However, Baba himself always emphasized that his actions were merely a reflection of God’s will, and not of his own ego or power.
Moreover, his miracles were often subtle and humble. For instance, Baba’s healing touch was not always overt, sometimes taking the form of simply being in his presence or receiving a kind word from him. This deep humility in his approach to his gifts further adds to the mystery. Despite being capable of extraordinary feats, Neem Karoli Baba never sought fame or recognition for his actions, always reminding his followers that the ultimate goal was love and service, not miracles.
The mystery deepens when one considers the fact that Baba did not engage in the formal rituals typically associated with spiritual power. He did not follow the path of asceticism, yoga, or study of sacred texts in the way many other saints did. Instead, his practice was simple: surrender, love, and selfless service. It is said that his spiritual power was not something that could be measured by external achievements but was a quiet, inward transformation of consciousness.
Ultimately, Neem Karoli Baba’s power remains shrouded in mystery, and perhaps that is part of the legacy he left behind: a reminder that spiritual wisdom is not to be understood by the intellect, but by direct experience and surrender to the divine.
2. What was the secret behind Neem Karoli Baba’s miraculous healing abilities?
Neem Karoli Baba’s miraculous healing abilities have captivated the hearts and minds of millions of devotees. It was said that his mere presence could heal ailments, both physical and emotional, often leaving no trace of illness or suffering. However, the true secret behind his healing powers has never been fully understood and remains one of the great mysteries surrounding his life.
While some attribute his healing abilities to his deep spiritual connection with God, others suggest that Baba’s healing was an extension of his profound compassion. His understanding of suffering—both human and spiritual—was unparalleled. Baba’s approach to healing was not focused solely on curing the body; it was a holistic approach that aimed to heal the entire person. He often spoke about the importance of inner peace and mental clarity, emphasizing that physical ailments could often be a manifestation of emotional or spiritual blockages.
For Neem Karoli Baba, healing was not an external act but a process of aligning the individual with divine energy. His teachings emphasized surrendering one’s ego and seeking divine love in all things. His approach was very different from conventional medicine. Instead of focusing on the illness, he often encouraged people to focus on their love for God and service to others, as these actions were believed to be the true sources of healing.
Interestingly, many of Baba’s healing stories were more than just physical cures. He often guided people to spiritual practices or made them confront inner emotional struggles, which in turn allowed them to heal. His words were like medicine for the soul, and it was believed that his guidance could cure deep-rooted emotional wounds as effectively as it could cure physical illnesses. Some of his followers have described experiencing miraculous recoveries after they received his blessings, but it is important to note that Baba often redirected their focus from the miracle itself to the deeper, spiritual lessons.
Baba’s healing also extended to mental health. There are numerous accounts of people suffering from severe mental distress who found peace and clarity after spending time with him. The healing wasn’t always immediate or dramatic; sometimes, it took time for the inner transformation to unfold. His approach was gentle and without expectation, and it was his unwavering faith in the healing power of love that set him apart.
Ultimately, the secret behind Neem Karoli Baba’s healing abilities remains elusive. Some would say that his healing power was an expression of divine love, others argue that it was rooted in his deep understanding of human suffering. But perhaps the real mystery lies in the simplicity of his methods—healing through unconditional love, service, and faith in the divine.
3. Why did Neem Karoli Baba remain silent about his past?
Neem Karoli Baba’s silence about his past is one of the most intriguing aspects of his life. Unlike many spiritual figures who carefully construct narratives around their lives, Baba intentionally chose to keep his history veiled in mystery. There are no clear records of his birth, early life, or family background, and his followers respected this silence. But why did Baba choose to remain silent about such matters, especially when many spiritual leaders offer detailed biographies?
One explanation could be that Baba wanted his followers to focus on the present moment, rather than being distracted by the past. By not revealing details about his life, he prevented people from idolizing him or seeking to understand him through the lens of his past. Instead, he encouraged people to connect with his teachings and his presence in the moment. This focus on the present aligned with his central teaching of surrendering to God and living a life of devotion, free from attachment to the past or future.
Baba’s silence could also be viewed as an expression of humility. He often rejected the idea of being seen as a great or special person. He discouraged any notion of ego or self-importance. By withholding information about his past, he perhaps wanted to remind people that spirituality is not about the person but about the divine presence within all beings. The message was clear: what mattered was not his history, but the love and service he embodied in the present.
Furthermore, Baba’s silence may have been intentional to preserve the mystery and sanctity of his existence. Many spiritual leaders, especially in India, are known to have mysterious or mythic backgrounds, and Baba may have wished to maintain that sense of awe and wonder. By remaining an enigma, he invited his followers to experience him directly, rather than creating a narrative that could be scrutinized or dissected.
Another possible reason for his silence is that Baba understood the limitations of the intellect. He often said that spiritual truth could not be conveyed through words alone. If his life story were shared, people might become preoccupied with the details, missing the deeper message of love and surrender. By focusing on the mystery, he kept his devotees from becoming attached to the external and allowed them to go deeper into the heart of his teachings.
In the end, Neem Karoli Baba’s silence about his past serves as a powerful lesson in letting go of attachment to personal history and ego. His life, shrouded in mystery, continues to inspire countless individuals to seek the divine presence in the present moment, free from the confines of the past.
4. How did Neem Karoli Baba’s presence affect those around him?
Neem Karoli Baba’s presence had a profound effect on everyone who came into contact with him, whether they were his devoted followers or mere visitors. It is said that people felt an immediate sense of peace, comfort, and spiritual awakening when in his presence. But what was it about his being that made his presence so transformative?
For many, being near Baba was akin to being in the presence of the divine. His energy was so pure and his aura so strong that it created a sense of deep tranquility and connection with the higher self. People often spoke of feeling as though they were bathed in an indescribable love that transcended human understanding. This was not just a superficial feeling, but one that reached deep into the soul, sparking a profound shift in consciousness.
Baba’s mere presence seemed to have the power to dissolve fears, anxieties, and doubts. Many people reported experiencing an immediate sense of clarity or insight into their life’s purpose after meeting him. This change was not always immediate, but over time, those who spent time with him were said to undergo a profound transformation. Some would describe feeling as though they had received guidance directly from the divine, even without words being spoken.
This sense of transformation occurred not only through physical closeness to Baba but also through the stories and teachings he shared, even in the most subtle ways. Neem Karoli Baba did not engage in lengthy discourse or instruction; rather, his teachings were embodied in his actions, his gestures, and even his silence. He was often seen as a living example of unconditional love, compassion, and spiritual surrender. This embodied presence was more powerful than any words or lessons could have been.
People who came into Baba’s presence also often reported experiencing miracles or inexplicable events. Some claimed to have had their prayers answered before they had even spoken them, while others described feeling healed of long-standing ailments after spending time in his company. Baba’s presence seemed to work in mysterious ways, often bypassing the rational mind and reaching directly into the heart and spirit.
Ultimately, Neem Karoli Baba’s presence was not just about the physical experience of being near him but about the energy he radiated. His deep spiritual connection with the divine allowed him to act as a conduit for peace, love, and healing, offering a glimpse of the ultimate spiritual truth. His presence continues to inspire devotees around the world, as they strive to embody the same love and selfless service that Baba exemplified in his lifetime.
5. What was the deeper meaning behind Neem Karoli Baba’s teachings on service?
Neem Karoli Baba’s teachings on service have always been one of the core elements of his spiritual message. He constantly encouraged his followers to engage in selfless acts of service, but the deeper meaning behind this practice is often overlooked. What was Baba trying to convey when he urged everyone to “love everyone, serve everyone”?
On the surface, Baba’s teachings on service appear simple: serve others without expecting anything in return. But there is a profound spiritual dimension to this practice. According to Baba, serving others is not merely an act of charity, but a way to connect with the divine presence in all beings. He believed that by serving others, we are actually serving God, as the divine resides in everyone. Therefore, every act of service is an act of worship and a way to deepen our connection with the divine.
Baba’s teachings on service also emphasized humility and selflessness. He believed that true service was not about gaining recognition or accolades, but about offering oneself entirely to the welfare of others. This service required a complete surrender of the ego, as the act of serving others must come from a place of pure love and compassion, rather than a desire for personal gain. In this way, service became a spiritual practice that helped to purify the heart and mind.
Furthermore, Baba often spoke about the importance of serving without attachment. Service should not be done with the expectation of reward or recognition, but purely out of love for others and for God. This practice of selfless service is seen as a way to transcend the limitations of the ego and experience the oneness of all life. It is through service that one learns to see beyond the surface and connect with the divine presence in each individual.
The deeper meaning of Baba’s teachings on service can also be understood as a form of spiritual discipline. By serving others, one learns to let go of selfish desires, overcome the limitations of the ego, and cultivate a heart full of love and compassion. In this way, service becomes a pathway to spiritual growth and enlightenment.
In sum, Neem Karoli Baba’s teachings on service go far beyond simple acts of charity. They are an invitation to recognize the divine in all beings and to surrender the ego in order to experience the true essence of love and oneness with the universe.
6. How did Neem Karoli Baba influence the spread of bhakti yoga?
Neem Karoli Baba’s teachings have had a significant influence on the spread of bhakti yoga, especially among his followers in the West. Bhakti yoga, the path of devotion, was at the heart of Baba’s spiritual philosophy. Through his personal example and direct teachings, he made the practice of bhakti more accessible and relevant to people from all walks of life.
Bhakti yoga emphasizes the cultivation of love and devotion to God, and Baba’s teachings were a living example of this path. His life was a continuous act of devotion, and he encouraged his followers to cultivate the same devotion in their lives. However, Baba’s approach to bhakti was not rigid or formal. He taught that devotion could be practiced in the simplest ways—through loving service, through surrender, and through deep prayer.
Through his interactions with devotees, Neem Karoli Baba made the principles of bhakti yoga feel attainable for ordinary people. He didn’t demand any special rituals or formal practices, but instead emphasized the importance of a heart full of love and surrender to God. For Baba, the true essence of bhakti lay not in rituals or temple worship, but in the sincere devotion and love that one felt for the divine.
Baba’s influence in the West, particularly through figures like Ram Dass, helped bring the practice of bhakti yoga to a wider audience. Through his books, teachings, and personal experiences, Ram Dass shared Baba’s message of love, service, and devotion. The impact of this movement can still be seen today, as bhakti yoga continues to be practiced by people around the world, many of whom were introduced to it through Baba’s influence.
Neem Karoli Baba also made the practice of bhakti accessible to people of all backgrounds, not just Hindus or those familiar with traditional Indian spiritual practices. His teachings transcended religious boundaries, appealing to anyone who was willing to open their heart to love and devotion. By making devotion simple and universal, Baba brought the profound teachings of bhakti yoga to the modern world.
Ultimately, Neem Karoli Baba’s influence on bhakti yoga was profound. He demonstrated that devotion to God could be practiced through every action, no matter how small, and that true love for the divine transcends religious boundaries and rituals.
7. What was the significance of Neem Karoli Baba’s relationship with the divine?
Neem Karoli Baba’s relationship with the divine remains one of the most profound mysteries of his life. His deep and unwavering devotion to God was the cornerstone of his spiritual teachings, yet the nature of his personal connection with the divine is largely indescribable. Baba never claimed to be a deity or an avatar, but his constant reference to the divine presence in everything and everyone suggested a unique and intimate connection with God.
Baba’s teachings centered around the idea that the divine is omnipresent and can be accessed through sincere devotion and love. However, the depth of his personal experience of the divine was something that few could comprehend. He spoke about God in such a way that it seemed as though he had a direct and unbroken communication with the divine, but always with humility and without any sense of grandeur. Baba’s life was a continuous act of surrender to the divine will, and his every action—whether in silence or speech—was an expression of this divine relationship.
One of the most significant aspects of Baba’s relationship with the divine was his embodiment of love. He taught that love is the highest form of devotion and the purest form of connection with God. In every interaction with his devotees, he demonstrated that love and service to others were not just acts of compassion but manifestations of divine presence. His ability to see God in all beings and to love unconditionally was a living testament to his direct and intimate connection with the divine.
There were also numerous accounts of Baba performing what seemed to be miraculous acts, which his devotees believed were the result of his unique relationship with the divine. He would often claim that it was not him who performed these actions, but the divine working through him. This teaching reinforced the idea that the divine, not the individual ego, is the source of all miracles. Through his example, Baba invited his followers to cultivate a deeper connection with the divine within themselves.
At the same time, Baba maintained that God could not be confined to any form or shape, and his devotion was not directed to any one particular deity. His understanding of the divine was vast and all-encompassing, which allowed him to transcend any sectarian religious boundaries. This universal approach made his teachings resonate with people of all faiths, who found in his presence a direct path to God, regardless of their background.
Ultimately, Neem Karoli Baba’s relationship with the divine was not one that could be fully articulated in human language. It was something that his followers could only understand through direct experience—through the love, peace, and spiritual transformation they felt in his presence. His life was a testament to the possibility of living in constant communion with the divine, showing that true devotion transcends formal rituals and beliefs.
8. How did Neem Karoli Baba’s teachings on “surrender” transform his followers?
One of the most powerful and transformative aspects of Neem Karoli Baba’s teachings was his emphasis on surrendering to the divine will. For Baba, the concept of surrender was not about giving up control or resigning oneself to fate, but rather about letting go of ego and personal desires in order to align oneself with a higher purpose. This teaching of surrender became a central practice for his followers, leading many to experience profound shifts in their lives.
Baba often spoke about surrendering to God as the key to spiritual growth. He emphasized that true freedom and peace could only be attained when one relinquished attachment to the ego, personal desires, and outcomes. By surrendering, individuals were able to let go of the burdens of the mind and heart, allowing them to experience a deeper connection with the divine. This surrender was not a passive act, but an active, ongoing process of offering oneself in service to God and humanity.
For Baba’s followers, the act of surrendering was transformative. It allowed them to move beyond their personal struggles, fears, and limitations, and to find a sense of purpose and clarity. Many devotees have spoken of feeling a profound sense of relief and liberation when they fully embraced the practice of surrender. This was not a surrender to external circumstances, but a surrender of the inner self to the divine presence that Baba embodied. In this way, the practice of surrender became a spiritual path, one that led to greater peace, love, and understanding.
Baba’s teachings on surrender were also closely connected to the idea of faith. He encouraged his followers to trust in the divine plan, even when it seemed difficult or unclear. This act of trust, which was also an act of surrender, helped his followers release their anxieties and fears, knowing that they were being guided by a higher power. In times of uncertainty or hardship, many devotees found solace in Baba’s teachings, trusting that everything was unfolding according to a greater cosmic plan.
Surrender also played a role in cultivating humility. Baba’s life was an embodiment of humility, and he encouraged his followers to adopt this quality in their own lives. Through surrendering, one learned to let go of the need to be in control or to seek recognition, allowing space for divine grace and wisdom to flow. This sense of humility was transformative for many, helping them to build deeper, more meaningful relationships with others and to live a life of service and compassion.
In the end, the practice of surrender was not just about submitting to external circumstances, but about cultivating a deeper trust in the divine and in one’s own inner wisdom. By surrendering to the divine will, Baba’s followers were able to experience greater peace, clarity, and spiritual growth, ultimately realizing that true freedom comes from letting go of the ego and embracing the infinite love and guidance of God.
9. Why did Neem Karoli Baba encourage his followers to practice unconditional love?
Unconditional love was at the heart of Neem Karoli Baba’s teachings, and it became a transformative practice for many of his followers. Baba often spoke about the importance of loving everyone without judgment, without attachment, and without expectation. But why did Baba place such an emphasis on unconditional love, and how did it shape the lives of his followers?
At its core, Baba’s message of unconditional love was an invitation to transcend the ego and embrace the divine presence in all beings. He taught that love was the highest form of spirituality, and that by loving without conditions, individuals could experience a direct connection with the divine. This love was not limited to one’s family or friends, but extended to all beings—human and non-human alike. Through practicing unconditional love, Baba believed that one could experience the oneness of all life and move closer to the divine.
The practice of unconditional love was also about overcoming the boundaries of the ego. Baba understood that the ego often creates separation between individuals, leading to judgment, resentment, and conflict. By practicing unconditional love, one could transcend these divisions and experience a state of unity with others. This love was not about romantic attachment or affection, but a pure, selfless love that sought the well-being of all beings without expecting anything in return.
For Baba’s followers, the practice of unconditional love was transformative. Many described feeling a deep shift in their hearts after receiving Baba’s teachings. They found that when they loved others without expecting anything in return, their relationships deepened, and they experienced a sense of peace and connection with the world around them. Unconditional love, in Baba’s eyes, was the key to spiritual awakening and inner peace.
This love was also a way to purify the heart. Baba often said that love was the most powerful force in the universe, capable of dissolving all negative emotions, such as anger, fear, and hatred. By practicing unconditional love, his followers learned to let go of their attachments to resentment and judgment, cultivating a heart full of compassion and understanding. This love was not based on external circumstances but on an inner decision to see the divine in everyone and everything.
In teaching unconditional love, Baba also helped his followers understand that love is not something that can be controlled or forced, but something that arises naturally when the heart is open and free from judgment. By focusing on loving without expectations, Baba encouraged his followers to create a space where love could flow effortlessly, touching the hearts of everyone they encountered.
Ultimately, Neem Karoli Baba’s message of unconditional love was an invitation to experience the divine presence in every moment and in every being. For Baba, healing was not just about curing physical ailments but was intrinsically linked to spiritual and emotional healing as well.
One of the most famous healing stories involves a devotee who was suffering from a life-threatening illness. She had tried many treatments and had nearly given up hope when she came to Baba’s ashram. Baba, in his usual manner, did not say much to her, but his presence seemed to provide instant comfort and peace. She attributed this miraculous healing to Baba’s divine grace, emphasizing that it wasn’t just the physical cure but the deep sense of inner peace that had truly transformed her.
Another example of Baba’s miraculous healing abilities comes from a story told by Ram Dass, one of Baba’s most devoted Western disciples. Ram Dass had suffered from a severe back injury and was in tremendous pain. Baba, seeing his discomfort, instructed him to “go to the hospital.” Ram Dass was puzzled, but when he went to the hospital and followed Baba’s indirect guidance, his pain miraculously diminished, and he experienced a speedy recovery. Baba’s instructions were often subtle, yet they had a profound healing effect, teaching his followers to trust in the process of healing and divine timing.

Baba’s predictions were often not made with any outward signs of effort. He did not sit down to analyze or deliberate over the future, but rather, his predictions would emerge spontaneously during conversations, in casual moments, or through simple interactions with his followers. For instance, he would sometimes give subtle hints about life-changing events, such as marriages, travel, or health issues, which would only be understood by the devotees when those events later unfolded.
One well-known example involves a devotee who was about to embark on a journey. Before leaving, Baba told him, “Be careful on your trip; something unexpected will happen.” During the journey, the devotee encountered an unexpected challenge that he had not foreseen. However, due to Baba’s warning, he was prepared and managed to navigate the situation with calmness and wisdom. This kind of foresight, often delivered with a sense of calm detachment, was indicative of Baba’s deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all things.
Another miraculous prediction involved a devotee who was grappling with uncertainty about a major life decision. Baba assured them that everything would unfold in the best possible way, even though the situation appeared bleak at the time. One of the most well-known accounts of Baba’s control over time and space involves a devotee who, while traveling in a distant location, encountered a life-threatening situation. The devotee, although miles away from Baba, began to pray fervently, asking for Baba’s protection. The devotee, overwhelmed with gratitude, accepted the money, realizing that Baba’s materialization was not an ordinary event, but a divine act aimed at fulfilling the needs of his followers.
Baba’s materializations were often not just random acts but served as teachings to his followers. Through his actions, silence, and brief words of wisdom, Neem Karoli Baba was able to teach profound spiritual truths that continue to resonate with his followers today. His approach was unique because it did not rely on dogma or doctrine but on the direct experience of divine love and grace. Baba’s wisdom was simple yet deeply transformative, guiding his followers on the path to spiritual enlightenment and union with the divine.
10. How did Neem Karoli Baba’s miracles align with his teachings about surrender?
Neem Karoli Baba’s teachings about surrender were at the heart of many of the miracles that took place in his presence. For Baba, surrender was not about giving up or passively accepting whatever came; rather, it was about letting go of the ego, trusting in the divine, and allowing the grace of God to flow through every aspect of life. His miracles were often expressions of this deep surrender to God’s will, and they served as powerful demonstrations of how surrender can bring about profound transformations.
Many of Baba’s miracles were triggered by the deep faith and surrender of his devotees. When a devotee fully surrendered their desires, fears, and attachments to Baba, the miracles often followed as a natural expression of divine grace. Baba himself would frequently remind his followers that the key to receiving God’s grace was surrender. He would say things like, “Trust in God and let go,” urging his devotees to relinquish control over their lives and allow the divine plan to unfold.
In some cases, miracles would occur when a devotee reached a point of deep surrender, where they no longer struggled with their personal desires or fears. One of the most significant miracles attributed to Baba was his ability to heal not just the physical body but also the emotional and spiritual wounds of his devotees. This healing, Baba emphasized, was a result of complete surrender to the divine. When one surrenders, they open themselves to the infinite possibilities of grace, and miraculous transformations can take place.
Baba also demonstrated that surrender was not just about receiving but also about giving. Many of the miracles involved Baba showing his devotees the power of selfless service and devotion to others. He would encourage his followers to help others without expecting anything in return, teaching them that true surrender involved serving others with love and humility. Baba’s miracles, therefore, were not just about meeting material needs but were also about elevating the spiritual consciousness of his devotees.
In one famous story, Baba told a devotee who was struggling to make ends meet to “surrender everything to God.” The devotee, following Baba’s advice, let go of their attachment to outcomes and allowed the divine to guide their actions. In doing so, the devotee experienced a miraculous change in their life circumstances, demonstrating how surrender opens the door to divine blessings and miraculous outcomes.
The miracles that occurred in Baba’s presence were not random or for the sake of impressing others; they were always tied to the deeper spiritual law of surrender and faith. Baba showed that when one surrenders to the divine will, miracles naturally unfold, as they are expressions of the divine grace that is available to all who trust in God. His life and miracles continue to inspire countless people to practice surrender and faith, reminding them that true transformation comes from letting go and trusting in the divine process.
In every miracle, Neem Karoli Baba’s message about surrender resonated deeply. His miracles were not meant to promote his own power but to demonstrate the infinite power of God and the importance of surrendering to that divine will. By showing the world how miracles could occur through faith, love, and surrender, Baba taught his followers that the greatest miracle of all is the transformation that occurs within the heart when one surrenders to divine love and grace.
